"Latin is the key to the vocabulary and structure of the Romance languages and to the structure of all the Teutonic languages, as well as to the technical vocabulary of all the sciences and to the literature of the entire Mediterranean civilization, together with all its historical documents."Dorothy Sayers

Latin and French

Building Foundations in Languages

Beginning in Grade 4 all students at St. Timothy’s receive Latin instruction. Right through to Grade 8 they methodically work through Latin spellings, vocabulary, grammatical structures and pronunciations. Why Latin?

French begins in grade one with an emphasis on vocabulary acquisition, the structures of grammar, and proper pronunciation. As with our English grammar program and our Latin classes, there is a strong emphasis placed on acquiring proper grammar skills, including verb conjugation, both written and oral, as a foundation for further learning.
